Professor takes top executive role at Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University has announced the appointment of Professor Liz Barnes to the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Barnes is currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Derby where she has worked for the last three years, playing a key role in shaping the academic portfolio and enhancing student satisfaction.

Previously, she spent 23 years at Teesside University, where she had a range of different roles and was most recently Dean of Social Sciences and Law.

Whilst at Teesside, she also led the development of e-learning and internationalisation across the university.

Originally from Staffordshire, Professor Barnes started her career as a PE and Maths teacher.

Her passion for teaching has continued throughout her roles in Higher Education and she was appointed as the first University Teaching Fellow in 1998.

On her new appointment Professor Barnes said: "I’m really looking forward to starting at Sheffield Hallam. The University is at the cutting edge of high quality learning and teaching and I look forward to being able to help shape the delivery of this in the future."

Professor Barnes will join the executive group at Sheffield Hallam from 1 January 2014 to begin her new role.
