Blyth entrepreneur launches fabric startup

Blyth entrepreneur Victoria Graham has weaved her passion for fabrics in to a new business with help from TEDCO and its Ready for Business programme, as well as Virgin StartUp.

The textile design graduate from Blyth has launched her startup business, Millsabelle, offering custom made fabrics and soft furnishings to both retailers and consumers.

Victoria has already landed contracts with local interior designers.

Having graduated from The University of Heriot-Watt in Scotland, Victoria returned to the North East where job opportunities in her field were limited.

Now a mother to two small children, she decided the time was right to pursue her chosen career and after obtaining an unused loom from her former university, she decided to set up on her own.

She received help from TEDCO Business Support and its investment readiness programme Ready for Business, which not only included practical start up advice, but helped her to secure a small low-cost start-up loan.

Additionally, Victoria could rely on a dedicated business mentor through TEDCO’s partnership with Virgin StartUp, a not for profit organisation launched in October 2013, providing low-cost business loans and mentoring support to entrepreneurs across the UK.

Ready for Business is supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund and Barclays, and is delivered nationwide by the Cavendish Consortium, a partnership between some of England’s leading enterprise agencies, together with the National Enterprise Network.

So far the programme has created more than 3,500 new jobs across the UK, more than 500 across the North East, and provides individuals with concentrated support in the pre-start and early stages of their business.

Sir Richard Branson partnered with TEDCO last year to officially launch Virgin StartUp for entrepreneurs in the North East and Cumbria.

TEDCO is the main access point for people in the region looking to source funding through Virgin StartUp. Its team of advisors will guide aspiring entrepreneurs through the application process, offering additional help and wider enterprise support as part of the Ready for Business programme.

Victoria said: “I have always loved weaving and creating my own fabrics so when I had the opportunity to acquire my own loom, it made perfect sense to take my passion one step further and turn it into a business.

“Textiles play a huge part in interior and fashion design and people are often looking for specific colours and shades that can be difficult to find off the shelf.

“As I weave my own fabrics I am able to create any design and colour to match existing items.

“I also design my own bespoke range of handbags, purses and cushions, which are now being sold through Facebook, etsy and my own website millsabelle.co.uk.

“Bill Hartshorne, business adviser at TEDCO was instrumental in helping me get the business off the ground.

“Not only did he provide practical advice, but he filled me with the confidence that I had a viable business idea and the ability to develop it into a successful concern.

“His help in securing a Virgin StartUp loan enabled me to buy the materials I needed to turn the idea into a reality.

“I have been astounded by the level of support available, not only from organisations such as TEDCO and Virgin StartUp but from the community too; the owners of Crown Carpets in Blyth have given me space in their shop to keep my oversized loom, without which it would have been difficult to get the business off the ground.“

“I haven’t looked back. Whilst it is still early days, I’ve secured contracts with some well-known, high-end interior shops in the region, where customers are now offered custom-made fabrics for their soft furnishings.

“This seems to have been very well received and is keeping me and my loom very busy.“

RBS and NatWest have launched an additional £110 million Small Business Fund aimed at supporting small businesses across Yorkshire and the North East.

Supporting businesses with fixed rate loans from £1,000 to £250k with no arrangement fee

Part of wider £1 billion fund to be distributed regionally with Yorkshire and North East region receiving £110 million

The fund, which is part of a wider dedicated £1 billion that will be split between eleven different areas across the UK,  will target both new and existing customers who are looking to grow or diversify their business.

With the potential of a base rate rise on the horizon, this fund will help small businesses to grow by borrowing money with the certainty of a fixed rate and repayments.

Feather & Black founder sets up two new on-line companies

Adam Black, the Yorkshire entrepreneur and ex-founder and managing director of bedroom furniture retailer Feather and Black, has launched two new on-line companies.

They are bed linen retailer Secret Linen Store and bed and mattress company Button and Sprung.

Yorkshire-born Black left Feather and Black in March 2013 and immediately began to talk to private equity companies about possible business ventures

“It became apparent that I knew more about this sector than anyone else,“ he said. “For me to decide to do something completely different would have been like Wayne Rooney leaving Manchester United and becoming a golfer.“

Black, 46, is part of the well-known Black family in Yorkshire. Keighley-based Peter Black Holdings, which was founded by and named after his grandfather in the 1940s, became one of the UK’s largest suppliers of shoes, handbags and gift packs to Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Next.

In November 2013, Black teamed up with investors including ex-Asos international director Jon Kamaluddi and Asos’s former head of IT strategy Martin Strotton to launch Secret Linen Store.

Secret Linen Store dispatches straight to the consumer from its supplier in Portugal, meaning it can offer products at up to half the price of rivals.

“We have no rent and no storage costs so our fixed cost base is really low,“ Black said.

Secret Linen Store was set up ‘in the Yorkshire way’, he said, with an investment of £50,000. It is expected to make a £150,000 turnover in its first year.

But although Black has a stake in the company, his day job is running a new bed and mattress business, Button and Sprung.

He teamed up with Matthew Hardcastle, formerly of eBay and Shop Direct, to create a niche player in the market with a website and one showroom.

“My belief is that the alternative to Amazon and Ebay is the guy who is the very best at what he does,“ Black said. “I saw an opportunity to create a very focused bed and mattress company.“

Its pocket-sprung mattresses are made by Leeds-based manufacturer Harrison Spinks. Most of its upholstery is manufactured in Poland.

Delivery plans for a possible Business Improvement District (BID) for Leeds city centre are in the final consultation stages.

Businesses from all sectors across the city have given their insight into what challenges and issues they are likely to face over the next five years and what they would like to see local investment of up to £10 million focused on if a BID were to be established in their city.

A BID is a business-led partnership that enables coordinated investment in the management and marketing of a commercial area.

Governed by legislation to ensure fairness and transparency, a BID is developed through consultation with the business community and the subsequent development of a five year Business Plan.

This plan is voted on by all those that will be asked to pay the levy.

A comprehensive feasibility phase to establish if there was indeed an appetite for a BID in Leeds ran from September 2013 to February 2014.

This produced a resounding yes. Since then further more in-depth liaison has taken place to establish key needs for business.

John Bywater, the BID4Leeds chairman said: "I see the BID as an important step for Leeds city centre to create coordinated leadership and to secure investment for the future.

"We invite businesses to get involved in the discussion over the coming weeks ahead of being asked to vote in February 2015".

Prew Lumley, who is a Partner at Squires Patton Boggs is a member of the BID4Leeds Steering Group said: "The city of Leeds has so much potential and I see the BID as a springboard to achieve great things.

"I am supporting this initiative as I believe it will prove to be real value to the city"

“I’m really proud of The Professional and excited to see it grow. Alongside a quarterly print publication, content is also updated daily across web (www.the-professional.co.uk), tablet and mobile platforms.

A young entrepreneur who beat cancer has set up Fresh RB Productions, his own Community Interest Company (CIC) in Manchester thanks to support from business growth hub Gateway2enterprise.

The CIC is designed to provide a creative space for young people suffering from a terminal or serious illness.

Oladamola Babalola, 25, originally launched Fresh RB Productions, as a limited company in January last year.

Fresh RB Productions, based on Boston Street, Manchester, is a media production company that delivers high-quality video production, professional photography and audio production services.

Prior to setting up his own business, Oladamola studied communications and business studies at the University of Liverpool, where he first realised his passion for media production.

It was also during this time that he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system.

Determined to complete his degree, Oladamola continued his studies while undergoing chemotherapy for six months to remove the tumour.

After being given the all-clear in 2010, Oladamola then went on to complete a master’s degree in marketing at The University of Manchester.

Following this, he worked for a number of digital marketing agencies in the city, before he decided to take the leap and set up his own business.

Oladamola was first introduced to Karen Melonie Gould, CEO of Gateway2enterprise, when he applied for a business loan through Rock Star Youth and Start Up Loans. She acts as lead partner for the North West for both organisations.

Karen became Oladamola’s mentor and she provided expert start-up advice and support to help him refine and strengthen his business strategy and business plan.

He was also given help to successfully apply for a loan, and he used the money to help market his business and purchase essential equipment such as a new camera.

When Karen Melonie Gould set up Gateway2enterprise, a revolutionary way for SMEs to source finance, alternative funding solutions and other business support services and resources, Oladamola signed up as a member to access its support.

Oladamola said: “After surviving cancer, your mindset completely alters and I knew I wanted to do something to help others that are going through a similar experience.

"Being creative is a great outlet and helps to take your mind off things, so I wanted to provide a free service that can help encourage this. Gateway2enterprise informed me about the benefits of community interest companies and the steps I needed to take to become one.”

Gateway2enterprise helped Oladamola turn his business into a community interest company so he could use his profits to help people who are suffering or have suffered from cancer or other forms of serious illness.

He was given a wealth of advice and support on reshaping his business to fit this new structure, as well as finding a suitable location for a new recording studio.

The studio will be open for free to young people (18-24) undergoing treatment for a terminal or serious illness, so they can record music and create videos.

Oladamola used Gateway2enterprise’s online hub to speak one to one with professional business angels, who are on hand to provide invaluable advice on running a successful business.

The business angels have all started and grown prosperous businesses, are multilingual and available for advice via Skype 24/7.

Oladamola said: “It’s great to know Karen and the business angels are just a phone call away.

"They are extremely supportive and have extensive business knowledge so if I ever have a problem that needs solving or a question that needs answering I know they can help.

"Their expertise is second to none and is so helpful for young entrepreneurs like myself.”

Karen Melonie Gould, CEO of Gateway2Enterprise, said: “It’s been a joy to see Oladamola’s brand develop from an initial business concept to a fully-fledged and successful company, especially as it’s one which benefits the community so directly. "He made great use of the support available and is already applying his newfound entrepreneurial skills to grow the business further.”

To access the services available through Gateway2Enterprise, businesses just need to register for a free account and complete a member’s profile. For more information, visit www.gateway2enterprise.co.uk

Newcastle grooming business Alpha Male Grooming today announced expansion plans with the purchase of their premises, following funding from Barclays.

Run by entrepreneur Lee Hetherington and his wife Claire, the salon has become a recognized establishment locally for the modern contemporary male and provides a wide variety of services varying form a shampoo and cut right through to waxing and massages.

Lee recently introduced an online booking system for the salon and as well as saving time it’s meant more choice for his customers.

The business employs 7 staff and turnover is expected to reach £220k this year.

Barclays Business Banking has more than 827,000 customers, including a mixture of start-ups, sole traders, partnerships and limited companies with a turnover up to £5 million.

They have helped 108,000 start-ups over a twelve month period by June 2014.

Owner and founder, Lee Hetherington, said: “We’ve rented the premises for over 8 years now but following a further rent increase we decided the time was right to secure the future of the business and purchase the premises.

“I contacted my broker Darren Baker of Peritus Private Finance and they put me in touch with Barclays.

“I’ve never invested in commercial premises before but I was determined to take the business to the next level and although this is a massive step for the business it allows us to plan for the future more confidently.”

Business development manager at Barclays, Matthew Heaton, said: “Lee and Claire operate a fantastic business that has a great clientele locally.

“They are always looking for innovative ways to expand their services and grow their business and we were able to move quickly to help Lee secure the deal.

“Being able to support both existing and new customers is very rewarding and can quite often lead to life changing opportunities – I’m looking forward to seeing Lee and Claire take their business to the next level.”

Alpha Male Grooming was established in 2008 and is located at Henry Street, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Staff at Quorum Business Park are raising funds for men’s health this October for The Movember Foundation, which challenges men to bring the moustache back during November.

On Friday 31 October, the Q9 reception area will be transformed into a pop up barbershop, courtesy of Gosforth based Wilson Barbershop Co, who will be offering free ‘express’ wet shaves for any Movember participants across the park to de-fuzz ahead of the challenge.

Appointments can be booked in 20 minute slots with drop in sessions in between. A number of Movember goodies and literature about Men’s Health will also be available.

Once Movember is fully underway, Quorum’s ‘Mo Quo’ Team will keep in touch with participants and chart their progress through to a Movember closing party at the end of the month where prizes will be awarded for the best, and worst, efforts.

Founder and owner of Wilson Barbershop Co, Robyn Wilson, said: “Being a barbershop with a male-only clientele, we’re constantly surrounded by beardy blokes, so we’re really excited about Movember this year; it’s all about ‘the mo’!

“As well as fundraising at the Quorum shave event – the shaves are free but we’ll be accepting donations – we’re also running 10k at the MoRunning event at Exhibition Park on November 9th. We’re hoping to raise over £500 for the Movember cause, and we’re sure we can smash this with the help of our amazing clients!“

Quorum events manager Laura Barber said: “Movember has become a really popular charity, with over 4 million moustaches grown worldwide – support which is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues year on year.

“We’re encouraging staff to spread the word about the challenge so we can engage as much support as possible across the park. Men sporting Movember moustaches on Quorum will effectively become ambassadors for the charity throughout November, and our ‘Mo Quo’ Team can support the men in their lives and help make Quorum a fundraising force.“

Business tourism in Sheffield is on the up according to a new independent report.

The annual UK Events Market Trends Survey carried out by Team Tourism, showed a second year of consecutive growth with the figure up from £103 million in 2012 to £117.3 million in 2013.

Other findings from the report showed the amount of business generated from outside the Yorkshire region had increased for Sheffield, rising from 25% in 2012 to 32% for 2013.

The increasing importance of the association sector in Sheffield was also highlighted, accounting for 27% of business in Sheffield, significantly higher than the average of 19% in the rest of the UK.

Buoyancy in the sector was further evidenced by 65% of businesses predicting further increases in 2014, the most optimistic businesses have been in 5 years.

The news has been welcomed by Marketing Sheffield who operate a number of long term initiatives specifically focused on increasing business tourism.

Brendan Moffett, director of Marketing Sheffield said: “These figures highlight Sheffield’s growing reputation as a great venue for conferences and meetings.

"Our particular focus on targeting association business is clearly paying off and we are constantly bidding on future events using leads generated by our Conference Ambassador Programme’.

The news comes off the back of our most successful successful MADE Festival to date and we look forward to celebrating this at the annual Ambassador Dinner later this month”

The city was also given a boost in profile last month as the city hosted MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival in association with the BE Group, welcoming over 3,000 delegates.

Despite a strong performance in Sheffield, elsewhere in South Yorkshire the report showed a downturn on 2012 levels, especially within the hotel sector.
