Newcastle entrepreneur launches new children’s retail concept in Gosforth

Newcastle entrepreneur Minna Scaife has opened a new children’s retail concept store, Pikku, in Gosforth, Newcastle after receiving funding from PNE group.

On Friday, Pikku, a brand new children’s clothing store and adjoining children’s hairdressing salon opened on Gosforth High Street.

The store, which will feature clothing for newborn babies to the age of 6, will include a range of exclusive, mid-high end brands, which aren’t on sale anywhere else in Newcastle.

Pikku Hair, the adjoining children’s hair salon, offers a special for children to have their haircut, taking the stress away from parents at the same time.

Minna’s venture was partially self-funded, and partially funding by business support agency PNE Group.

Pikku, which means ‘Little One’ in Finnish, will sell a wide range of clothing brands, some of which are exclusive to the UK.

Pikku also stocks a stunning collection of christening and formal wear for all those unique occasions.

Pikku currently employs 4 staff at the new concept store idea in Newcastle, with plans to extend across the North East and then the rest of the UK.

Minna Scaife said: “I’m originally from Finland and used to work in Formula 1. But after meeting a Geordie I moved to Newcastle, got married and had a baby!

"My story, in that sense, is quite unique. I’m now pregnant with my second child and I’ve noticed how difficult it is to find unique children’s clothing – something that I share with many fellow Mums. “

I wanted to create something special that’s not available on the high street. Children, even at a young age, have such a unique style and I wanted to celebrate that. And it is great to be able to support our local High Street with a brand new shopping experience”.

North East entrepreneur Blake Robinson has acquired Catering Solutions (North East) Ltd, a Newcastle-based company that designs and installs commercial kitchens, in a move facilitated by the Commercial and Corporate department of Durham-based Gordon Brown Law Firm.

Catering Solutions, which also supplies equipment and machinery to the catering industry, was established over a decade ago.

Mr Robinson, who also owns North East firm Exordia Training Ltd, has plans to expand the business into new areas and, over the next 18 months, establish a catering academy to train young people and provide apprenticeships and job opportunities within the hospitality industry, of which Exordia Training Ltd has experience.

Mr Robinson said: “The previous owner is a family friend who wanted to sell his business to someone who would continue to maintain the relationships built up with customers and bring in new ideas, allowing him to retire in a few years.

“I saw this as a great opportunity to acquire a successful local firm – Catering Solutions (North East) Ltd has a fantastic reputation with strong repeat business and good referrals from blue chip organisations down to the individually owned takeaways and cafes.

“My focus now is on growing the company, and providing jobs and opportunities for young people and the long term unemployed in the local area.“

“Gordon Brown Law Firm has been great to work with.

“Paul Crawley facilitated the sale, easing us quickly and simply through the legal process.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.“

Solicitor at Gordon Brown Law Firm, Paul Crawley, said: “It was a pleasure to help Mr Robinson throughout this acquisition.

“This has not only secured the jobs of the company’s current staff, but, as the business grows, further employment opportunities are likely to be created for people in the local area.

“We wish Mr Robinson all the best for the future.“

Retail entrepreneur Graham Kennedy, who invested more than £750k in three flagship fish and chip takeaway and restaurants in Durham, has expanded his empire into Tyne & Wear.

Graham Kennedy, owner of Bells, has launched a fourth outlet in the multi-million pound Teal Farm development in Washington.

Chartered surveying firm Bradley Hall helped Graham to strike a deal to lease a 1,250 sq ft unit from landlord Hellens Developments. Situated near the Sainsbury’s Local store, it is ideally placed to service the Teal Farm village and business park.

Graham has invested £200k in a major refurbishment of the premises to bring it in line with the contemporary, upmarket style of his other three eateries.

Now he hopes to create ten jobs at the Washington takeaway, which has now opened its doors.

Bradley Hall acted on behalf of Graham in the acquisition of the unit and @Retail acted on behalf of the landlord Hellens Developments.

Graham has spent almost 30 years serving fish and chips to hungry customers. He launched his first shop at Pittington before buying Bells in Gilesgate, Durham. Three years ago he opened another outlet in Market Place after Bradley Hall helped him secure a deal to buy the former Bimbi’s restaurant from Eastwood Fisheries, which had fallen into administration. Bradley Hall then assisted him in the launch of his outlet on North Road, Durham.

Graham said: “We are delighted to expand our business into Washington.

“The property provides a superb platform for us to showcase our tried and tested brand with a quality product and I have no doubt that the takeaway will be as successful and popular as our Durham outlets.

“Location is vital to the success of any venture and the premises that Bradley Hall has managed to secure for us are in areas of high footfall with the potential to attract passing trade.“

Director of Bradley Hall, Peter Bartley, said: “I have acted for Graham in all of his recent acquisitions and I am quite passionate about his drive and knowledge of his product and business.

“The opening of this unit adds to his existing substantial business and will allow people further north of the region to sample what I believe to be the best fish and chips in the North.“

Director of Hellens Developments, Gavin Cordwell Smith, said: “I always thought that the property would suit such a use and I am delighted that Graham has chosen to incorporate his unique brand and quality product within this unit.

“It will only enhance our Teal Farm development as well as providing a much-needed facility to the local businesses and residents in Washington.“

Staff at Quorum Business Park are raising funds for men’s health this October for The Movember Foundation, which challenges men to bring the moustache back during November.

On Friday 31 October, the Q9 reception area will be transformed into a pop up barbershop, courtesy of Gosforth based Wilson Barbershop Co, who will be offering free ‘express’ wet shaves for any Movember participants across the park to de-fuzz ahead of the challenge.

Appointments can be booked in 20 minute slots with drop in sessions in between. A number of Movember goodies and literature about Men’s Health will also be available.

Once Movember is fully underway, Quorum’s ‘Mo Quo’ Team will keep in touch with participants and chart their progress through to a Movember closing party at the end of the month where prizes will be awarded for the best, and worst, efforts.

Founder and owner of Wilson Barbershop Co, Robyn Wilson, said: “Being a barbershop with a male-only clientele, we’re constantly surrounded by beardy blokes, so we’re really excited about Movember this year; it’s all about ‘the mo’!

“As well as fundraising at the Quorum shave event – the shaves are free but we’ll be accepting donations – we’re also running 10k at the MoRunning event at Exhibition Park on November 9th. We’re hoping to raise over £500 for the Movember cause, and we’re sure we can smash this with the help of our amazing clients!”

Quorum events manager Laura Barber said: “Movember has become a really popular charity, with over 4 million moustaches grown worldwide – support which is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues year on year.

“We’re encouraging staff to spread the word about the challenge so we can engage as much support as possible across the park. Men sporting Movember moustaches on Quorum will effectively become ambassadors for the charity throughout November, and our ‘Mo Quo’ Team can support the men in their lives and help make Quorum a fundraising force.”

Manchester entrepreneur scoops £10,000 national funding prize

Aaron Darke from Northern Moor in Wythenshawe, Manchester has won a nationwide competition – with the top prize of £10,000 to help start up his new enterprise.

He beat hundreds of contestants from across the UK to win the final of TestTown, with his fledgling alternative brewing company - Zymurgorium.

Mr Darke, aged 23, said: "This is the biggest thing ever to have happened to my business."

Described as a community-focused meadery and brewery, Zymurgorium offers an innovative range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, with many of the raw materials used grown or foraged in the Wythenshawe area.

The name comes from combining ‘Zymurgy’ - the science of brewing - and ‘emporium’ a shop which sells various items. The Zymurgorium range includes champagne-style mead, rosehip copper ale, lychee vodka, kiwi pale ale and hibiscus cola.

Mr Darke grows his own berries and has harvested sloes, rosehips and figs from Chorlton Water Park and Wythenshawe Park.

Organised by the Carnegie UK Trust, the TestTown contest gave young entrepreneurs an opportunity to demonstrate innovative business ideas and how they would work in a town centre environment – whether in a shop, office, green space or market stall.

Mr Darke won a regional final held in Wythenshawe in August, before travelling to Cambridge to take on contestants from Middlesbrough, Coleraine, Rhyl, Kirkintilloch, Bury St Edmunds and Perth at the national final, which was judged by a panel of six experts.

After a period of market research, he was challenged to set up his own pop-up shop in Cambridge.

He explained: "The contestants were judged on the business’ viability as an ongoing success, branding, product quality and customer service. I also had to make a presentation to the judging panel, in a room packed with local businesspeople.

“Fitting everything that Zymurgorium means to me into the six minutes available was impossible. It was a great experience, but I have to say, also nerve-wracking. However, I think the nerves actually worked in my favour, as it gave me energy and made what I had to say more heartfelt."

Mr Darke now plans to take stock and then take full advantage of the opportunity by investing the £10,000 wisely.

He added: "I’ve had great support from the regeneration team at Manchester council to help me get this far, so I will continue to work with them and Carnegie Trust UK to work out how to best use the prize money.

"In the meantime, I’ll continue to invent new drinks – it’s business as normal."

Around 450 teams of young people aged 16 - 30 applied to take part in TestTown nationwide, making it one of the country’s largest ever entrepreneurial competitions.

Jim Metcalfe, TestTown UK Programme Leader, said: "We congratulate Aaron on the success of being crowned the TestTown winner. It’s without doubt that his business idea has the strength to go extremely far and we wish him and all of the contestants the very best for the future."

Councillor Sue Murphy, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "I’d like to congratulate Aaron on winning TestTown 2014 and I’m sure that the prize money will help him to go on to build a real Manchester success story.

"Aaron is just one of the many young people in the city who have the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to become successful in business.

"TestTown is beneficial for young people, helping them to get real experience of how the high street works in practice and to develop their professional skills. It’s wonderful that we were able to play our part in giving Aaron the support he needed to win this prestigious competition."

North East entrepreneur Gemma Ash is marking her first year in business with plans for expansion and recruitment, to allow her to meet growing demand.

Gemma, who owns Ultimate Skin Clinic in Blagdon, has seen her business flourish since she started in 2013, doubling in size as she’s developed her services for treatments with medical properties, the only of its kind in the area.

Now, the 38-year-old qualified microbiologist and midwife, who has a commercial background in the medical sector, is looking to achieve more after revealing a five-figure investment plan.

This will see an expansion of her current salon at the Milkhope Centre by early 2015 to include four treatment rooms, a new wet-room, additional retail space and an upgraded reception area.

Gemma is also looking to boost demand among the lucrative male market for her expertise and services with new grooming products and dedicated men only treatment days and experiences.

The move will help to push predicted turnover to upwards of £500k by 2017 while she builds up her team of expert technicians and consultants.

Services include cosmeceutical facial therapies, non-surgical facelifts, anti-aging skin care treatments, body and head massages, make-up consultations and eye enhancement programmes.

Currently employing two assistants, but with plans for the recruitment of two more skilled technicians, Gemma has doubled predicted first year turnover on the back of building a strong and loyal clientele in Morpeth, Ponteland, Gosforth and Jesmond.

As she secures her client base and, in turn revenue, Gemma said momentum is gathering now that the clinic’s reputation for excellence is established and further new product introductions, such as a pioneering European body contouring and skin tightening system, and non-invasive skin treatment, become available.

She added that Ultimate Skin Care will continue to support its talented team while looking to encourage and nurture a new generation of young, highly skilled people within the firm and the wider industry who will be based at the Milkhope site.

Gemma said: “The future is exciting for us and we are getting busier by the week. We now have the foundations and plans in place to move forward over the next three years to achieve even more success.

“Clients are already benefiting from the investments we have made in service, staff training and new products while plans for an extension will only increase capacity and create local jobs.

“We’re building a strong team that has the skills to deliver a quality professional service to clients while I look to develop the business and explore new opportunities for growth and expansion.“

UK unemployment falls under 2 million but wages stagnate below inflation

UK unemployment total has fallen below two million, taking the employment rate to 6% for the first time since 2008 Office for National Statistics results show.

The number of jobless people fell by 154,000 to 1.97 million in the three months to the end of August, however wage growth remained below the current 1.2% inflation rate.

According to the ONS there were 30.76 million people in work, or 73% of people aged 16 to 64, up from 71.5% for a year earlier. This was 46,000 more than for March to May 2014, however it is the smallest quarterly increase since March to May 2013.

These changes continue the general direction of movement since late 2011/early 2012.

There were 9.03 million people aged from 16 to 64 who were out of work and not seeking or available to work (known as economically inactive). This was 113,000 more than for March to May 2014 but 46,000 fewer than for a year earlier.

According to the BBC, Chancellor George Osborne said the fall in unemployment was "evidence that our long-term economic plan is working".

He said: "I’m the first to say there are still too many people out of work. We need to make further reforms to our welfare system so that people have a life of work, rather than a life on the dole."

Rachel Reeves MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to today’s Labour Market Statistics, said: “Today’s fall in overall unemployment is welcome, but the new figures show working people are continuing to see their pay fall far behind the cost-of-living.

“Working people have seen their real wages fall by over £1,600 a year since 2010. The Government’s failure to act on low pay has led to millions of people struggling to get by, huge additional costs in Housing Benefit and Tax Credits paid to those in work, and the OBR warning about the impact on the public finances."

North East enterprise agency Pinetree is providing free ‘get ready for business’ sessions for budding entrepreneurs across the region.

Pinetree manages funds of more than £563k and is able to offer loans of up to £25k

The company, based in Birtley, Gateshead, is providing the sessions across the North East, including Birtley, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Chilton, Ashington, Trimdon Station, North Tyneside and Blyth as part of their programme of support for those with a startup business idea.

The half-day sessions, which are all lead by one of Pinetree’s seven dedicated business advisers, aim to provide participants with an understanding of the business planning process, as well as information on the financial assistance they can receive from Pinetree.

Those who attend will also explore why self-employment is an excellent option when it comes to careers and employment, as well as an explanation of the application process and the introduction to a detailed business plan.

The sessions, which are running throughout October, November and December, are completely free of charge, with the incentive of six free one-on-one business support sessions for everyone who attends.

More than 3,000 individuals and businesses have benefitted from the advice and support of Pinetree and its team. With a new ethos and greater emphasis on supporting new businesses in the region, Pinetree is looking to accelerate its client base and provide more people than ever with support and guidance to set up their own business.

Pinetree and the team can offer individuals and businesses a focused range of services, around business support, access to finance and managed office space.

Since 1991, Pinetree has been working to help a range of clients that include students, unemployed individuals, ex-offenders, people with physical and sensory disabilities, ex-service personnel, people aged 50+ and those individuals and businesses who have been refused mainstream finance.

Operations manager, Andrew Airlie, said: “We are running the business sessions to introduce people to the concept of self-employment and what it entails.

“By completing the session it forms part of the qualification for the next stage, one to one business support when clients are assigned to a dedicated business adviser who will work with them to develop their business plan.

“This will probably lead to an application for funding we do have access to our own loan funds and potential grant providers.

“The finance package will be tailored to the individual needs.“

Max Neely, who set up his mountain biking coaching business, Endevour, based at Hamsterely Forest, Durham, this year said: “The advice I received from the appointed adviser was priceless, I simply could not have followed my ambition to set up my own business without them.

“They took me through every step, including a business plan, pitching for the loan I needed to buy equipment and to set up my website, to help with understanding my accounts and registering with HMRC.

“I would strongly recommend Pinetree to anyone who has an idea for their own business as they will all go to great lengths to help and to ensure you can open and maintain a stable and successful business.“

Oxford Town Hall is offering office space to SMEs and entrepreneurs, creating up to 120 jobs, according to Oxford Times

One St Aldates is a new business centre at Carfax that will house up to 16 firms in serviced offices of 75 to 1,170 square feet.

120 jobs are expected to be created through firms moving into the space that is leased by Oxford City Council to Oxford Innovation, which runs business and innovation centres.

The office block was built in 1931 as an extension to the town hall and replaced Carfax House and the Castle Inn, which were demolished in the previous decade.

Chris Allington, managing director of Oxford Innovation, said: “We are delighted to form a partnership with Oxford City Council that will provide fantastic support to local businesses in Oxford’s prestigious and historic Town Hall.“

City council leader Bob Price said: “The council’s economic development strategy identified the need for more starter units as a key element in sustaining the city’s rapid employment growth over the past decade.

“The Starter Unit Review Report stimulated our plans to convert the Carfax block from its former use as offices for council staff into a focus for innovation activity.“

Richard Venables, managing director of property consultants VSL Partners, which handled the deal, said: “One St Aldates was an unusual building because it was sub-divided into so many smaller rooms and split over four floors.

“It ideally suits a serviced office function and given its central location should be very popular.“

A Teesside entrepreneur today announced expansion plans for her business with funding from Barclays.

Entrepreneur Andrea Summersgill decided to set up her own business in 2011 and put her passion for dogs to good use.

She launched Paws ‘n’ Claws grooming parlour in Marske and as the business developed she also acquired some additional premises for a pet shop.

With the growth of both businesses she has now decided the time is right to purchase her own premises at The Wynd in Marske and combine both businesses on to one site.

Andrea now employs five people locally, including an apprentice as part of the Government’s apprenticeship scheme.

As well as traditional grooming Andrea also offers a unique creative grooming and doggy day care.

Owner of Paws ‘n’ Claws, Andrea Summersgill, said: “I’ve always loved dogs and so setting up the grooming parlour was an easy decision for me when thinking about going into business and becoming self-employed.

“As the business developed the pet shop became a natural progression with interest rates as low as they are I have now been able to purchase my own premises.

“It felt like a big step to make but Barclays helped with the funding and I’m delighted that I’ve not only secured the future of the business but have managed to purchase the premises with no increase on my previous monthly costs for the two leases I had.“

Business Banking Manager at Barclays, Trevor Jenkins, said: “Paws ‘n’ Claws is a great example of how to turn a passion into a successful business and it has proved extremely popular in Marske and the surrounding area.

“Andrea is well positioned to take the business to the next level and her customers now have all the services she provides on one site.“

The University of Manchester has received a landmark donation for the future development of Manchester Business School from Lord Alliance of Manchester and his fellow Trustees of the Alliance Family Foundation.

The donation of £15 million will be invested both in the School’s new building and to drive its research agenda forward.

In recognition of this support and Lord Alliance’s long-standing relationship with the University and the Business School, the School will be named ‘Alliance Manchester Business School’ or ‘Alliance MBS’.

Lord Alliance said:  "Over many years I have followed with growing admiration and pride the development of Manchester as a world-class centre for business education and I am delighted to support the next major stage in its growth and development.

"Twenty years ago I instigated the bringing together of separate disciplines to create the Federal School of Management, the pre-cursor to MBS as it is today, of which I am very proud.

"Manchester as a city has done so much for me and this is my opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the next generation of managers and entrepreneurs who will come to our superb business school to develop their leadership skills and contribute to the prosperity of our society in the future."

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, said: "This announcement marks the culmination of decades of engagement and supportive partnership with Lord Alliance.

"Today we honour with tremendous gratitude his long-held vision for the potential for a world-class business school to help power the economic development of the city and region.

"We are deeply proud to associate his name with MBS on campus and across its six global centres.

Leeds entrepreneur Daniel Fairburn launched online furniture company Out & Out Original one year ago and has now set his sights on the £1 million mark for 2015.

In May 2013, Daniel founded and launched www.outandoutoriginal.com, an online furniture store that is committed to supplying ethically sourced and produced furniture.

Thanks to a £50k loan under the Government’s Funding for Lending Scheme and the help and support from NatWest director of Business Banking Chris Rushworth, the company has grown from strength to strength.

Despite the business only starting a year ago, Out & Out Original, based in Doncaster, aims to hit the £1million mark next year and they are looking to grow internationally too.

Daniel Fairburn, director and founder, said: “Despite travelling the world and living abroad for several years, the single greatest challenge to date was setting up Out & Out Original.

“I approached four banks with my business plans and one point blank refused to even meet me but the team at NatWest took the time to read my business plan and were constructive in their feedback. With their help, I’ve been able to start and run a successful business.

“Without the loan, I wouldn’t have been able to buy all the stock or launch the marketing drive needed to get the business to where it is today and for that I am truly grateful.“

After graduating from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2005 with a first class honours degree in Business and Marketing, the 30-year-old relocated to Saigon, in Vietnam where he started working for Danish garden furniture giant, ScanCom International.

He worked and lived in Vietnam for six years, rising through the ranks to become Head of Product Development. Throughout his career, the father of one has worked with the likes of IKEA, Next and Laura Ashley before going alone and founding his own business in 2013.

Within the first three months, the website received 25,000 visitors and to date, the business has over 270 products and the team has doubled in size.

NatWest’s Chris Rushworth said: “We knew that Daniel had an excellent business idea matched by a strong business plan and an energy and enthusiasm which would take him a long way.

"His success in his first year has been outstanding, and we are proud to work with him.

"We wish Daniel an even more successful second year of trading and I would urge anyone else with a great business idea to talk to us to see how we can help bring it to fruition.“

Daniel added: “I am so pleased to see how the site and the business has grown over the past year. I still remember when the very first order came in in the first two weeks and the overwhelming feel we had when packaging and shipping the product out.

"It has been stressful at times but I’m very confident in the path that we’re on and it is all down to the hard work of each and every member of the team.“

A delegation of Yorkshrie textile manufacturers are set to travel to Shanghai as part of fabric and fashion exhibition ‘Intertextile’ in collaboration with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the UK Fashion and Textile Association.

Five firms from West Yorkshire are part of a 16-strong UK delegation attending the event, highlighting the fact that Yorkshire represents the biggest single manufacturing cluster of wool textiles in the UK.

They are Guiseley-based Abraham Moon & Sons, whose clients includes Paul Smith and Burberry; Bower Roebuck of Holmfirth; Bradford-based Joseph H. Clissold; Huddersfield’s Fine Worsted’s; and Taylor and Lodge, who provided the luxurious material for the Tom Ford tuxedo worn by Daniel Craig in the Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

All will have the chance to meet potential customers, explore new market opportunities, and learn about next season’s trends.

UKTI’s regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, Mark Robson, anticipates the regional delegation will be very well received: “Yorkshire fabrics are highly regarded in the textile industry, and the county has a great legacy of weaving, design and manufacture. ‘Intertextile’ is an excellent showcase to demonstrate the region’s textile capabilities.”

Will Halstead, sales director from Taylor & Lodge said: “There is a real opportunity in China for companies such as Taylor & Lodge, with its heritage and its reputation for making some of the most luxurious fabrics in the world.

“This is the second time Taylor & Lodge have attended Intertextile in Shanghai, and the response from the first show was very promising.

"We now have a foothold in the market and with the backing of our Chinese partner, Shandong Ruyi, we hope to continue the positive progress already made in this very important market.”

John Pickles, sales director at Abraham Moon & Sons said: “We have been returning to the Intertextile Shanghai on a regular basis since 2011, and have seen real growth in the market.

"In the last five years we have noticed the demand for British Made, 100% Wool fabric has increased dramatically, which is very good for Abraham Moon & Sons.

“Intertextile Shanghai is the most important show to us to build on our growth in the region.”

MSc Marketing Management student at Teesside University Satwinder Badesha has launched a search engine identifying gluten free products, Gluten Free Occasions, following a £6,500 from Teesside University’s social entrepreneurship fund.

Satwinder hit upon the idea after spending several hours online trying to find an appropriate birthday cake for his mother who suffers from Coeliac Disease.

For the past 14 months Satwinder has been compiling a directory of more than 5,000 restaurants, takeaways, hotels and bakeries which serve gluten-free products.

This directory is now available on his new search engine to help sufferers of Coeliac Disease find ingredients and products which are gluten free.

The £6,500 grant has been made possible by a £25k grant from UnLtd – a support charity for social entrepreneurs.

As a not-for-profit social enterprise any profits raised from the website will be spent on developing it further, with any additional money going to the charity Coeliac UK.

Coeliac Disease is caused by intolerance to gluten and affects approximately one in 100 people.

Sufferers of Coeliac Disease who are not on a gluten-free diet can experience a range of symptoms including digestive difficulties, tiredness, sudden or unexpected weight loss, hair loss and anaemia.

As well as the UnLtd grant, Satwinder also received help from Teesside University’s enterprise team in the form of mentoring and support.

Satwinder said: “Finding food which is suitable for my mother is always a real struggle and one day after spending hours searching the internet trying to find a birthday cake for her, I decided to try and do something about it.

“There are a lot of people who suffer from Coeliac Disease and so far, the response has been fantastic with lots of people being really supportive on Twitter.

“The help and support from the enterprise team has been phenomenal as it has given me new skills, access to contacts and has enabled the project to achieve its potential.”

Director of Academic Enterprise at Teesside University, Laura Woods, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to work with Satwinder to set up this fantastic website.

“Allowing sufferers of Coeliac Disease to quickly and conveniently source products and ingredients which will be safe for them to eat will have a major impact on the lives of thousands of people.”

More than one in five wealthy individuals in Yorkshire and the North East are planning to move country within the next five years.

This is according to the Barclays Wealth Insights series, as the opening up of markets and rise of technology leads to increased mobility among high net worth individuals (HNWIs).

Based on a global survey of more than 2,000 HNWIs comprising entrepreneurs, business leaders and investors, the report examines where individuals today live, work, retire and give their time and money.

The report shows that 41% of HNWIs in Yorkshire and the North East have already lived in more than one country, and 20% have lived in three or more, with the most common destinations being the US (33%), France (29%) and Singapore (14%).

However, it is the offspring of Yorkshire and the North East’s high net worth individuals that could ascend to become a truly multinational generation, with 54% of HNWIs in the region expecting their children to live in more countries than they have done.

Despite this trend towards an increasingly global lifestyle, for a large proportion of HNWIs in Yorkshire and the North East, home is still where the heart is.

90% of HNWIs say they live in the region because it was where they were born or grew up, indicating that the vast majority of wealthy in Yorkshire and the North East return to their roots even after living abroad.

Community spirit is stronger among HNWIs in Yorkshire and the North East than in any other region, with 52% saying they identify strongly with their local community, the highest across the country.

This is also reflected in their attitudes towards philanthropic giving, with 67% of HNWIs in Yorkshire and the North East preferring to give to local rather than global causes, also the highest in the country.

Martin Cuthbert, regional director, Yorkshire, Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, said: “The innate sense of belonging and loyalty demonstrated by high net worth individuals in Yorkshire and the North East is testament to what a fantastic place the region is to live, do business and raise a family.

“As borders open up and advancements in technology make the world a more connected place, no doubt we will start to witness greater numbers of wealthy individuals planning to move themselves, their families and their businesses to new destinations.

"However, what is evident is that Yorkshire and the North East is still a hub for business, entrepreneurial activity and wealth creation, as well as charitable activity and endeavours, and there is no sign of that changing any time soon.”
